back to Curriculum Page

Dear Parents and Children,

This is an outline of work that the children will be doing this half term.

Literacy

We have two teaching assistants working alongside the class teacher in order to split the children into year groups to improve differentiation. Owl class will be learning about stories from other cultures and looking at stories and poetry with a seaside theme also.
Y1 will be reading some stories from a range of cultures, some with patterned or predictable language. They will be writing some stories of their own using these as models. They will also be looking at seaside themed poetry and stories linked with our topics in history and geography.
Y2 will be reading stories from a range of cultures, some of which will be written by the same authors so that they can compare similarities and differences. They will be writing stories of their own based on those from other cultures and responding imaginatively through drama.

Both year groups will be heard read at least twice a week by an adult. Please ensure that you hear you child read on a daily basis as this really enables them to progress much quicker and motivates them. Spellings will be given out and tested on Mondays. Some of these spellings are linked to the spelling and phonic work carried out in class and others are key or ‘tricky’ words for the children to learn. Library day will now be on a Friday.

Numeracy

We have two teaching assistants working alongside the class teacher in order to split the children into year groups to improve differentiation.
Y1 will be solving problems involving  measures and money, adding and taking away with larger numbers and thinking about whole, half and quarter turns and describing the position of objects. They will also be counting on and back in 2s, 5s and 10s and thinking about sharing into equal groups.

Y2 will be solving problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and solving 2-step word problems. They will get more practise at adding and subtracting mentally and learning to tell the time to the quarter hour.
